As a mom and business owner with an on-the-go lifestyle, I have come to realize that I can’t run on empty so sleep, self care, and nutrition have become a real priority. In order to perform my best at home, at the office, or at the gym I need to prioritize balanced meals and snacks. And I often need something that I can run out the door with.
An easy way to get a lot of nutrition into an on-the-go “meal” is with a smoothie. But if this smoothie is going to keep me going it must contain the components of a balanced meal, maintain my energy, combat hunger, and taste satisfying – yeah, a lot to ask! This means:
- Carbohydrates – from fruit, oats, and/or natural sugars
- Protein – from yogurt, soy milk, hemp hearts, and/or cows milk
- Fibre – from fruit, vegetables, and seeds
- Fat – from seeds, nut butters, and/or avocado
- Antioxidants and other micronutrients - from fruit and greens
I also hear from clients that they struggle to consume greens regularly. I struggle too! I was so excited to discover local Saskatchewan producer, Prairie Soul Smoothie Co. and their Peashoots Smoothie Booster Cubes - adding greens to a smoothie or shake couldn’t get any easier. Peashoots are considered a leafy microgreen that contain vitamins A, C, K and fibre, which means they support our bones, heart, gastrointestinal tract, and immune function.
Putting it all together, I’ve created this amazing Tropical Power Smoothie for your on-the-go life:
(Makes 2 servings)
Ingredients
1 cup frozen pineapple
1 kiwi fruit (skin peeled)
5 cubes Praire Soul Peashoots Smoothie Booster Cubes
½ banana (frozen or fresh)
¼ avocado (frozen or fresh)
1 tbsp hemp hearts
½ cup vanilla yogurt
1 cup soy milk, cows milk or lactose free milk
Directions
Combine all the ingredients in a blender and mix until you have a smooth consistency.
Pour into a travel cup and enjoy!
