Sunshine in a Can!

We are well into winter here in the prairies and with it, we say goodbye to all the fresh produce of the Summer and Fall seasons, including fresh Canadian peaches. Although Canada doesn’t have a winter peach industry, I have teamed up with California Cling Peaches to shed some light on the nutritional value of canned cling peaches, and how we can enjoy the summer seasonal fruit all winter long.

I remember as a child, my mom canned fresh peaches for the winter. But that only got us half way through the season, at which point she would turn to store bought canned peach products. Peaches were a go-to for dessert or bedtime snack, whether on their own or topped on vanilla ice cream. Of course I cannot forget when mom treated us to peach crepes on the weekends.

These days, pregnancy has me craving sweet and juicy fruit (don’t get me wrong, poutine and ice cream are up there too)! But peaches have really hit the spot and I am satisfying those cravings lately by starting my morning with this Peachy Coconut Overnight Oats recipe.

Because canned peaches are picked and packed at ripeness, they tend to contain more nutrients. A study published in the Journal of Science and Food Agriculture compared nutritional content of fresh and canned peaches. They found that canned clingstone peaches provide comparable nutrient levels as fresh peaches, and that canned peaches have higher levels of folate and antioxidants such as vitamin C, with no changes in nutrient content during storage for 3 months.

Seventy percent of Canadians (including kids) continue to consume less than 5 servings of fruit and veggies daily (see here). Canned peaches can definitely be part of your child's bagged lunches, pre-sport snacks, or breakfast smoothie. Also, this time of year, our food banks still rely heavily on food donations! Consider donating canned Cling Peaches to your local food bank as another healthful option for those in need.

Enjoy a little sunshine-in-a-can this winter and get a boost of vitamin C, folate and fibre! So many great ways to enjoy canned Cling Peaches. A few more of my favs include:

  • Peach Pie Smoothie Bowl
  • Sliced peaches with pecans, a drizzle of maple syrup, and cinnamon
  • Peach slices on peanut butter toast or pancakes
  • Or simply enjoy plain, canned peaches to satisfy a sweet tooth
