Mulled Wine Mocktail
With the holiday season upon us, all the fun holiday cocktails start to pop up too! My favourites being: spiced rum and eggnog, Irish Cream hot cocoa, mulled wine, and gin punch.
But THIS year, I'm pregnant! I didn't think avoiding alcohol would phase me at all, but I'm realizing what a simple pleasure it is for me to indulge and enjoy a festive boozy drink once in awhile. I'm having to get creative in recreating my favourite cocktails into "mocktails" and I've started with this Mulled Wine Mocktail.
When I looked at other recipes online, I found many of them were just way too sweet, since they added extra sugar to the mix. Even when I trialed this recipe with just juice and no added sugar, I STILL found it too sweet, hence the addition of water. I want the flavour without consuming loads of sugar and this recipe finds a nice balance. So to all my fellow pregos out there, this is for you (well, and for anyone who would also like to enjoy a festive, non-alcoholic beverage)!
3 cups 100% pure red/purple grape juice (I actually prefer the taste of Welches grape juice over a no-name brand because it has a bit more "bite" to it)
2 cups water
3 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
2-3 teaspoons fresh grated ginger
1/2 a navel orange, sliced
Orange zest from 1/2 a navel orange
2 bay leaves
4 whole cardamom cloves (optional)
Add all of the ingredients to a small - medium sized saucepan. Almost bring it to a boil (or at least don't let it come to boiling for long). Then reduce heat and simmer ~30 minutes. Serve hot.
