Hemp Protein Smoothie Plus Greens

I was asked by a few of our followers to provide a review on Manitoba Harvest’s new Hemp Protein Smoothie Plus Greens product. So here we go… Objective Data: There are three flavours to choose from: Chocolate, Mixed Berry, and Vanilla Chai. I am currently trialing the Vanilla Chai product. The protein powder combines Manitoba Harvest’s HempPro 70 powder with organic coconut sugar, an organic greens blend (spinach, kale and broccoli), and organic vanilla chai flavour. A 30 gram serving (4 tbsp) provides 130 calories, 3.5 grams of fat with 0.6 grams coming from omega 3 fatty acids (ALA), 10 grams of carbohydrate with 7 grams coming from the coconut sugar, 15 grams of protein, and a good source of iron! Subjective Assessment: The...

Lentil, Oat and Chocolate Chip Cookies

Lentils are a rich source of fibre, folate, protein, and iron. They're inexpensive, very filling, and a great vegetarian alternative to meat, fish or poultry. This recipe uses a split lentil because they cook much faster than a whole lentil and they puree nicely. The cookie itself, although a healthier option, is still considered a treat. It can be matched with cheese, fruit, or nuts to make a more balanced snack.   Preheat oven to 350 F Ingredients: 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 3/4 cup whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 egg 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract ~1 cup lentil puree 1 1/2 cups whole oats 1 cup semi-sweet dark...

Coconut Flour Banana Blueberry Muffins

Coconut flour is a wonderful gluten-free, fibre-rich alternative to wheat flour for use in baking. However, it cannot simply be substituted 1:1 in place of grain-based flours because coconut flour is super absorbent and requires additional moisture. Coconut flour is a very rich source of fibre at 10 grams per 1/4 cup, almost triple the amount found in 1/4 cup of whole wheat flour! It takes some getting used to, but I enjoy the variety of flavours, textures, and nutritional value coconut flour offers.   Pre-heat oven to 350F Dry Ingredients: 1/2 cup coconut flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Wet Ingredients: 2 ripe bananas 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 large eggs 1/3 cup honey 1/2...
